# Research Daily Summary: What Happened on October 27, 2026

**ALS study links spinal-fluid and blood T-cell patterns to disease progression**

Researchers also reported animal-model results for an osteoarthritis treatment, gene therapy in a calf, and preliminary genome-mapping data for blood cancers.

## Today in brief

In ALS, higher T-cell levels in spinal fluid were associated with slower disease progression, while some blood T-cell patterns were associated with faster progression. [1] A separate study found cartilage-binding coacervates reduced osteoarthritis damage in rats and mini-pigs, and Nabsys presented preliminary genome-mapping data for hematologic cancers. [2] [3]

A calf with a bovine form of maple syrup urine disease survived gene therapy, but Kevin Strauss’s patients have not received the treatment. [4]

## Also worth knowing

- Researchers profiled 20 people with sporadic ALS and found long-lived T-cell groups and cell complexes in cerebrospinal fluid. Cytomegalovirus-specific immune measures were associated with faster progression and shorter survival. [1]
- Cartilage-binding polyzwitterionic coacervates reduced cartilage deterioration and inflammation in rat and mini-pig osteoarthritis models while delivering anti-inflammatory drugs or mesenchymal stem cells. [2]
- Petunia, a calf with bovine maple syrup urine disease, survived gene therapy and was described as a healthy five-year-old heifer. Strauss’s patients have not received the treatment, including in a clinical trial. [4]
- Nabsys presented early genome-mapping findings for hematologic cancers and previewed software to analyze the results. Its platform is for research use, not diagnosis. [3]

## The day in numbers

- **20 people**: The sporadic ALS cohort profiled in the immune study. [1]
- **2 animal models**: Rat and mini-pig models in which coacervates reduced osteoarthritis damage and inflammation. [2]
