Today in brief

University Extension weed specialists urged farmers to separate some herbicide applications because tank mixes can reduce weed control.1 Coromandel International grew revenue in the quarter and first half ended September 30, while higher raw-material costs pressured fertilizer margins.2

Some herbicide tank mixes reduce grass control

Herbicide antagonism occurs when mixing products reduces weed control compared with applying each herbicide alone.1 Eric Prostko and Charlie Cahoon recommend researching a mix before using it or separating postemergence grass and broadleaf herbicide applications.1

Prostko said mixing 2,4-DB with clethodim can reduce grass control by 8% to 15% about half the time. Combining clethodim with imazapic can reduce control by 10% to 25%.1 Prostko advises treating weeds before they exceed four inches where possible. He recommends waiting three days after a grass herbicide before applying a broadleaf herbicide, or five to seven days before applying a grass herbicide after a broadleaf treatment.1

The specialists said raising the grass-herbicide rate within its labeled range may sometimes help, but it is unreliable, especially on large grasses.1 They said antagonism could theoretically contribute to herbicide resistance, but more research is needed to understand the mechanisms and risks.1

Coromandel sales rose as fertilizer margins narrowed

Coromandel International's revenue rose 6% in the quarter and 10% in the first half ended September 30, 2026. EBITDA fell, largely because higher raw-material costs pressured fertilizer margins.2

Crop Protection revenue increased 22% in the quarter, which the company attributed to export performance.2 Coromandel supplied about 3.3 million tons of fertilizer in the first half and said its phosphatic-market share reached 19%, up from 17% a year earlier.2 Chief executive S. Sankarasubramanian said a new phosphoric- and sulfuric-acid plant in Kakinada helped offset external supply disruptions.2

The company expects its new NPK fertilizer capacity to be completed in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027. Additional capacity for a crop-protection molecule is expected to start operating in the third quarter.2 Coromandel plans a launch plant for fluoro intermediates. It opened nearly 100 stores during the quarter, bringing its retail network to more than 1,300.2
