Limerick researchers test a model-based route to digital validation
The proof of concept links process understanding, controller design and validation evidence, but requires adaptation before industrial use.
Today in brief
A University of Limerick team demonstrated that a model-based pH controller could move from a development environment into an industrial control system.1
A workflow from process model to controller
Researchers at the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Center and the University of Limerick developed a risk-based workflow for validating digital pharmaceutical manufacturing systems.1 The team built a model predictive controller for pH regulation using a data-driven Hammerstein-Wiener model, then assessed process and control risks to identify and prioritize failure modes.1
The workflow connects process understanding, risk management, controller development, requirements, verification and deployment, allowing evidence to be generated during system development, Dermot McMorrow said.1 The researchers demonstrated that a controller developed and verified in a model-based environment could be deployed in an industrial programmable logic controller environment.1
McMorrow described the study as a proof of concept, not a solution ready for direct deployment.1 Industrial use would require fitting the workflow into an organization’s quality system, validation strategy and regulatory context, he said.1
