Today in brief

Genome-based estimates put Bundibugyo virus’s reproduction number below 1 after the outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, though the authors caution that the latest decline is uncertain.1

Genome analysis tracks outbreak growth

Researchers analyzed 680 Bundibugyo virus genomes collected from May 2 to September 6 to estimate the outbreak’s reproduction number over time.1 The estimate was 1.95 from March 1 to May 15, then 1.17 through June 15 and 0.72 from June 15 to August 29.1

The authors say the estimates describe the sampled virus population in Ituri and are preliminary.1 They also caution that a decline near the date of the final genome can occur in analyses of this kind, and that the size of this decline is uncertain.1
