Question 19 of 20 Advanced Scenario

What would you do if a sponsor deadline conflicted with participant safety or data integrity?

Short answer

Safety and data integrity win, and I would say so early and in writing. Participants' rights, safety and well-being come before the interests of science and society under ICH GCP. I would explain the risk, offer realistic options that keep the deadline partly intact, and escalate if the pressure continued.

Why

The first principle of E6(R3) says participants' rights, safety and well-being should prevail over the interests of science and society. Commercial deadlines rank lower still. In practice the conflict is rarely stated openly.

It looks like pressure to lock a database with open safety queries, to skip a reconciliation of SAEs between the safety and clinical databases, or to enroll a borderline participant to hit a recruitment target. A good answer separates what cannot be compromised from what can. Unresolved SAE discrepancies, eligibility of a participant, or consent are not negotiable.

The format of a listing or the order of non critical tasks is. Bring facts: which records are open, what the risk is, and how long each fix takes. Often a phased plan, such as locking after SAE reconciliation but finishing cosmetic checks later, meets the business need.

If someone insists on an unsafe or dishonest shortcut, escalate through quality assurance and record the decision. Signing off data you know are wrong is never the answer.

A strong answer covers

  • E6(R3) principle 1.1 as the ranking rule
  • Separate non-negotiable items from flexible ones
  • Bring facts, timings and options, not just refusal
  • Escalate through quality assurance and document
  • Never sign off data known to be wrong

Common mistakes

  • Treating the deadline as fixed and quietly cutting safety checks.
  • Refusing flatly without offering any path to meet the business need.
  • Leaving the disagreement undocumented.
