Question 1 of 6 Intermediate Scenario

How would you manage a project with an uncertain experimental milestone?

Short answer

Define a research milestone as a decision based on specified evidence, quality thresholds and a date. Success may mean learning that a hypothesis failed, rather than obtaining the hoped-for positive result.

Why

In an exploratory drug-discovery project, the team cannot promise a molecule will improve potency. It can promise to test a defined set of compounds, measure effects with a validated assay and make a decision using prespecified criteria. Write the milestone as a question with success and failure pathways, named owner, evidence package, timeline and resources.

For example, by the end of the quarter complete a blinded comparison across replicate experiments and decide whether to continue lead optimisation based on potency, selectivity and assay reliability. Make go/no-go thresholds scientifically justified and identify fallback experiments if critical controls fail. Revisit the plan when evidence invalidates its assumptions, with a controlled decision record.

NIH translational programmes provide practical examples of milestone-driven projects. Avoid turning uncertain biological outcomes into staff performance guarantees.
