Question 4 of 6 Intermediate Scenario

How would you prevent notebook execution order from changing a result?

Short answer

Run analyses top to bottom from a restarted kernel, make dependencies explicit and move critical transformations into tested functions or scripts.

Why

Notebooks hold mutable variables between cells, so running cell 18 before cell 7 can silently reuse an obsolete DataFrame. A reproducible workflow has one declared configuration, immutable raw inputs and cells that can execute sequentially without manual intervention. Clear hidden state, avoid editing the same object in many cells and isolate computation into importable functions with tests.

Execute the notebook in a clean kernel during continuous integration or use a pipeline tool for substantive production analysis. Store generated output paths with checksums rather than assuming the displayed image was recomputed. A top-to-bottom run confirms technical ordering, not that chosen statistical assumptions are sound.

An important boundary is that restarting alone does not fix undeclared external files or nondeterministic operations.

Common mistakes

  • Publishing a notebook that runs only after particular manual cell edits or a previous cached state
