What does a Clinical Research Associate do?
A Clinical Research Associate helps make sure a clinical study is actually conducted as its protocol and ethical obligations require. The work is practical and evidence-focused. It involves checking what happened at research sites, not simply collecting status updates.
The main tasks
- Plan and conduct monitoring visits
- Review source data and essential documents
- Follow up issues and corrective actions
What the work looks like
A typical week
The schedule may include preparing for a monitoring visit, reviewing consent and eligibility documentation, reconciling data questions, meeting site coordinators and writing reports after a visit. Some roles travel frequently. Others combine remote monitoring with occasional onsite visits, depending on trial design and sponsor policy.
Every employer, team and project is a little different.
What the work produces
Monitoring visit reports, issue follow-ups and site oversight evidence.
The judgement calls
Which deviations create immediate participant-safety concerns? Are missing documents isolated mistakes or a repeated site practice? Should an unresolved discrepancy be escalated now?
Decisions rely on the approved monitoring plan, GCP, documented evidence and sponsor procedures.
A participant seems enrolled before the recorded consent date. You examine the source documents and protocol, confirm the facts with the site, document the finding and follow the sponsor’s escalation process rather than silently changing the record.
What you need to know
Common tools include electronic data capture systems, trial master files, monitoring reports, issue trackers, study protocols, consent documentation and ICH-GCP knowledge. Device studies may add ISO 14155 requirements. The exact regulatory scope depends on the product and location.

Who you work with, and where the job ends
Works closely with site investigators, coordinators, Clinical Trial Managers, Data Management, Safety and Quality. The CRA’s primary field of responsibility is monitoring and site oversight, while the CTM leads broader study delivery.
A CRA is not necessarily a Clinical Research Coordinator. The CRC typically works inside a site to organize participant visits and procedures. The CRA generally monitors on behalf of a sponsor or CRO.
Often confused with Clinical Research Coordinator Clinical Trial Manager
How people get into it
Clinical research experience and monitoring-specific training.
