What does a MSAT Scientist do?
Manufacturing Science and Technology, usually shortened to MSAT, keeps a biologic manufacturing process understandable and controlled after it leaves the development laboratory. The role matters most when routine production reveals something that design work did not anticipate.
The main tasks
- Monitor process trends
- Support deviations and investigations
- Manage technical aspects of process transfer
What the work looks like
A typical week
A week can include manufacturing-trend review, technical investigation, discussion with an external CDMO, documentation for a process change and preparation for validation. During active campaigns, urgent manufacturing questions can interrupt planned analytical work.
Every employer, team and project is a little different.
What the work produces
Technical risk assessments, transfer studies and process monitoring reports.
The judgement calls
Is a process shift within normal variation? Can a manufacturing run continue safely under approved procedures? Does a proposed process change require comparability work or regulatory support?
The team must act quickly without replacing evidence with intuition.
An impurity trend begins rising across several lots, though each individual lot remains within specifications. The scientist reviews process variables and analytical consistency, identifies plausible causes and documents a plan to distinguish drift from measurement noise.
What you need to know
GMP, process characterization, process performance qualification, continued process verification, deviation investigations, CAPA, statistical process trending and technology transfer are important. Downstream specialists may need chromatography, ultrafiltration and viral filtration depth. Other MSAT teams focus on upstream culture or cell therapy operations.

How the role tends to work in general, never a requirement any employer has set.
Who you work with, and where the job ends
Coordinates Manufacturing, QA, QC, Process Development, Regulatory, external CDMOs and Supply Chain. MSAT is the technical bridge between process design and recurring real-world manufacture.
MSAT Scientist, MSAT Engineer and MSAT Manager can overlap. Distinguish canonical technical responsibilities from leadership, product modality and upstream or downstream specialization.
Often confused with Process Development Scientist
How people get into it
Manufacturing and bioprocess technical experience.
Where this profile comes from
Written by TheBench.Bio for the field in general, and reviewed on October 23, 2026. It draws on what employers ask for in real job adverts:
- Scholar Rock, Senior Engineer, Downstream MSAT
- Synthego, Manager, MSAT
A profile describes the work most people in the role share. One employer's version can be narrower or broader.
