What does a Robotics Engineer do?

A Robotics Engineer in biotech builds machines that can repeat physical actions accurately while handling the messiness of real laboratories. The role goes beyond writing a pipetting script and may involve robot hardware, motion, perception and recovery from unexpected conditions.

The main tasks

  1. Design motion and control logic
  2. Integrate sensors and actuators
  3. Diagnose mechanical and software failures

What the work looks like

A typical week

A week can involve testing grippers or deck layouts, debugging device firmware, writing Python control logic, integrating sensors and validating performance with scientists. Production systems require logging, diagnostics and maintainability because a robot that fails overnight can block an entire sample queue.

Every employer, team and project is a little different.

What the work produces

Robot control software, integrated hardware and reliability evidence.

The judgement calls

The engineer determines which tasks can be automated safely and where human review remains necessary. Design trade-offs include speed, repeatability, contamination control, serviceability and whether custom hardware is justified over existing equipment.

A robotic arm occasionally places a plate slightly off center. The engineer measures mechanical tolerances, assesses vision or sensor checks and updates the recovery procedure instead of treating the problem as a rare operator error.

What you need to know

Python, embedded electronics, Raspberry Pi or Arduino, robotics control, instrument APIs, actuator and sensor integration, test fixtures, calibration and mechanical design appear in hands-on laboratory robotics work. The exact stack depends on the automation platform.

Who you work with, and where the job ends

Works with assay scientists, mechanical and embedded engineers, automation software colleagues and lab operators.

Compared with Laboratory Automation Engineer, robotics work often includes more device and mechatronics development. The two roles may converge in biofoundries with custom automated workcells.

Where this profile comes from

Written by TheBench.Bio for the field in general, and reviewed on October 23, 2026. It draws on what employers ask for in real job adverts:

A profile describes the work most people in the role share. One employer's version can be narrower or broader.
