What does a Validation Engineer do?

A Validation Engineer demonstrates with documented evidence that equipment, software or processes perform as required. In regulated manufacturing, a technically functioning machine is not automatically a qualified machine. Requirements, tests, deviations and approvals must fit together.

The main tasks

  1. Write testable requirements
  2. Execute qualification and validation protocols
  3. Assess exceptions and traceability

What the work looks like

A typical week

The week may include reviewing user requirements, writing IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, coordinating factory or site acceptance tests, observing equipment operation and recording deviations. Projects typically involve engineers, vendors, operators, quality and IT, especially where computerized systems are in scope.

Every employer, team and project is a little different.

What the work produces

Validation plans, protocols, traceability matrices and reports.

The judgement calls

The engineer must decide which functions require testing based on risk, what constitutes adequate evidence and how to handle a failed test. Too little testing leaves risk unmanaged, while poorly targeted testing consumes time without increasing confidence. Change control preserves the qualified state.

An autoclave passes functional checks but a load configuration was never qualified. The engineer documents the gap and coordinates an approved challenge study instead of treating equipment operation as proof of validated use.

What you need to know

URS, risk assessments, FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, PQ, traceability matrices, change controls, CAPA and audit-ready records recur frequently. Depending on project, standards may include GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11. These are context-specific compliance frameworks rather than interchangeable checklists.

Who you work with, and where the job ends

Coordinates with process engineering, QA, operations, vendors, automation specialists and IT.

Process Engineers own equipment and process design decisions. Validation Engineers create and execute evidence that defined requirements are consistently met. The two work closely together during start-up and transfers.

How people get into it

Where this profile comes from

Written by TheBench.Bio for the field in general, and reviewed on October 23, 2026. It draws on what employers ask for in real job adverts:

A profile describes the work most people in the role share. One employer's version can be narrower or broader.
